FINAL BLOG ASIGNMENT

In this class I learned how to format my poetry and writing in a much more pleasing way. Aside from that it gave me an opportunity to experiment with how I approach my own writing and helped me uncover different ways to help writer’s block. It made more conscious of the spoken effect my words can have and how that can help with any kind of artistic writing. Additionally, the actual poets we learned about were almost all poets I had never heard of which was very exciting since the course both stayed away from the more conventional poets while still being engaging pieces of writing. Something I personally really appreciated were poets who were LGBT that were covered. As an LGBT person I’ve never had much of an academic chance to learn about LGBT authors since all the way into high school that topic was not elaborated on when it came to poets and the only other classes that did reference LGBT creators were college classes explicitly about LGBT issues.

The role of the artist has shifted in a more liberating tone over the past hundred years. If you even further back to art that was created during the renaissance, it was almost exclusively for churches in order to help facilitate people who were illiterate or commissions made by the extremely wealthy. Moving past that, earlier art that seems to allude to deeper more personal meaning is directed more towards the material world representing the metaphysical human emotion and the dynamic between human and nature as a metaphor for internal state of being. However art today is consumed at a much higher rate thanks to internet. Since art made by thousands of people can be instantly viewed in a couple clicks, art is collectively progressing at a much faster rate. Because of this, the role of the artist has become a more performative role outside of the actual artwork. While there are artists in the past like Salvador Dali who also seemed to be known for their persona as well as his work, it almost feels necessary to have one in the modern day in order to cultivate an audience.

Art has also become much more accessible to lower classes because of online tutorials as well as the digital medium which if one chooses to download illegally, does not need to rely on spending money on materials for their works. The role of the artist has become a much more communal space where the audience has become a more interactive component in art making. Art has also become a much more leisurely activity to do in general in terms of content as some people create fan content for media they enjoy as well as write things like fanfiction which has been ruled as art by the people who consume it. Aside from that art has shifted into a more commercial and graphic style where technical correctness is not really something that is seen in a modern day gallery setting.

Surrealist Poem

The Cup

Zoo animals
Passing by
tables stacked
With what doesn’t matter
and there is still
the cup

I drank this before
What doesn’t exist
It’s not tangible
But it’s sitting there

Moldy pasta
Juicy French fries
A dollop of sour steam
Could all be in a-
Where’d it go?

Run away steps bounce
Sour expression
Another Cup
Another Dream
There lies a cup filled
Then Something

The image is the poets pigment. The image is not an idea, it is a radiant node or cluster a vortex through which and from which and into which ideas are constantly rushing in. it is as true but painting and sculpture as it is for poetry

I decide to take line breaks for different reasons depending on the intent for the poem. Sometimes I think one line doesn’t match up with the rest of the poetry in terms of length and it feels out of place while other times it’s more intentional where I want to emphasize on that specific word by breaking a complete thought and forcing it to be the first word you read in the line. I love playing with fragments and the unsettling quality they can harness since realistically it would be an abnormal way to communicate with someone else.

In Hirschfield’s informative “The Line”, Hirshcfield breaks down poetic devices in an easy to understand matter. Even when he uses more “complicated” words like disquieting or saxophonist, the words in the sentences surrounding the complicated word are simple and give context clues as to what the word might mean. Hirschfield also stays unbiased in his opinion of which method of poetry writing is superior and instead incorporates different ways to write poetry to describe variations that can be successful all using the same poetic device. He provides a lot of alternatives as to why and how someone could break a line and explains why they’re successful and what makes them successful. Hirschfield also provides a lot of different poets in his writing, acting as a better resource for exploring different poetry. Over all Hirschfield’s advice seems very well researched and unbiased having included different poets, poetic terms, as well as different expressions of poetry.
